Depending On What You Choose, The Results of Hair Removal Last From Days to Years
One of the first questions we hear at Mara’s Med Spa in Dallas from women considering options for getting rid of unwanted hair is how long each of the different methods for hair removal last. While the most common treatments are highly effective, they don’t necessarily last forever and require follow-up sessions to achieve enduring results.
Here is how long different methods for hair removal last for women.
The Most Common Methods for Hair Removal Last Hardly Any Time At All
Shaving
It should come as no surprise that, for many women, shaving is their original go-to hair removal method. This is the method passed down from our grandmothers to our mothers and our mothers to us. But shaving has significant disadvantages for the modern woman – shaving only removes hair for a short time, is inconvenient, and can also result in painful razor burn. This is why many women look for alternatives to shaving when wanting to get rid of unwanted hair and why so many women in Dallas turn to Mara’s Med Spa to get long-lasting results.
Depilatory Creams
Depilatory creams work by weakening hair follicles, allowing them to be easily wiped away. While these creams are safe and relatively painless, some people may have allergic reactions or experience skin irritation because of the strong and harsh chemicals these creams contain, especially if the product is left on the skin longer than directed.
The results of depilatory creams last roughly as long as shaving, meaning that hair will start visibly growing back in about two to three days.
Two Popular Methods For Removing Unwanted Hair
Waxing
Waxing is a popular choice for many women seeking a longer-lasting solution for hair removal. Waxing involves the application of a thick, resin-based formula that is covered by cloth or paper strips. The strips are then quickly removed by pulling in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Waxing commonly targets eyebrows, lips, and the sensitive bikini area.
While waxing can give you silky, smooth skin, it can be painful and lead to irritation, scars, and discoloration when done incorrectly. (And who wants to take that chance with your beautiful face or bikini area!) Results usually last around six weeks.
Threading
In this hair removal approach, a cotton or polyester-doubled string plucks the hair out of its follicle. This method is most commonly used to remove facial hair—especially eyebrows—threading pulls hairs out like a lasso. You can expect this method for hair removal to last around six weeks.
Hair Removal That Lasts (and Lasts) is Possible!
The above options for removing unwanted may be the most common, but they are far from being permanent solutions. Fortunately, Mara’s Med Spa offers hair removal options that can last and last (and last).
Laser Hair Removal
One of the most popular hair removal treatments, and one of the most requested treatments we offer at Mara’s Med Spa, is laser hair removal. This approach targets a pigment in the skin called melanin, found in the bulge region deep within each hair follicle. During the treatment, we use an advanced diode laser to heat the melanin, which, in turn, damages the follicle. The treatment will either destroy the follicle and eliminate future growth or damage it sufficiently to slow hair growth in the follicle.
Treated hair won’t fall out immediately after treatment but will shed during the days and weeks afterward. While results can vary, the results of laser hair removal typically last for several months. And, for some lucky women, it may last for years.
While laser hair removal doesn’t guarantee permanent results, the hairs that do grow back are usually lighter in color and finer than previous growth, making them far less visible.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis offers the only potential avenue for permanent hair removal.
Electrolysis works by destroying the growth cells in hair follicles. During an electrolysis session, a technician inserts a very fine needle or probe into the targeted follicle. An electrical current then flows through the probe to kill the root and remove the hair.
Since electrolysis permanently damages hair follicles, the treated hair typically won’t grow back. But factors like hormonal fluctuations, the type of electrolysis used, and the skill of the technician will all play a role in the effectiveness of the treatment.
You can always count on the fully licensed and trained medical estheticians at Mara’s Med Spa to give you the best treatments – we hire only the best technicians in the business! Multiple sessions may be required to obtain optimal results.
