Luxury facials are one of our most-booked treatments at Mara’s Med Spa, and every day we receive free consultation requests from individuals looking for information on the pros and cons of HydraFacials.
Do HydraFacials live up to all the hype? Absolutely!
But as with everything in life, a balanced approach will give you the best results. This month Mara reveals the pros and cons of HydraFacials and also gives comparisons to similar med spa treatments. But first:
What Is A HydraFacial?
HydraFacials, or hydradermabrasion facials, are three-step facial rejuvenation treatments that cleanse and exfoliate the skin, extract dead skin cells, and infuse skin with an intensive serum full of antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid.
At Mara’s Med Spa in Dallas, we know everyone has their own skincare needs and concerns, so we personalize our HydraFacial treatments for you, providing proven remedies for:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
- Enlarged pores
- Clogged pores and acne
But how is hydradermabrasion done at Mara’s? Using a state-of-the-art, patented handheld device containing vortex technology, we cleanse your skin from the impurities and dead skin that come with everyday life in Texas. The pores in your newly resurfaced skin are now open and ready to receive the serum infusion.
Compared to traditional dermabrasion, which usually involves blasting the skin with grit, hydradermabrasion is gentle and relaxing for clients.
Now that you know what the treatment is, what are the pros and cons of HydraFacials?
HydraFacial Pros
There are many advantages to HydraFacial treatments at Mara’s Med Spa. Here are a few features that we love:
Inclusive to All Skin Types and Tones
Adults with fine lines and wrinkles, teenagers with acne, those suffering from rosacea, and anyone interested in treating sun-damaged skin can benefit from hydradermabrasion facials. HydraFacials are safe and effective for all skin tones.
No Downtime and Consistent Results
One of the best pros of HydraFacials is that after the treatment is complete, you can immediately return to regular life. There is virtually no downtime after the facial.
And while there are cumulative benefits of having regularly scheduled HydraFacials at Mara’s, you can rest easy knowing that your skin will get the same consistent treatment every single time!
Pain-Free Extractions
Have you ever skipped extractions during a facial because they are just too painful and leave your skin red? HydraFacials remove the pain from extractions, leaving you with clear, beautiful, glowing skin.
Customizable for Your Needs
As mentioned above, your medical esthetician at Mara’s will customize your serum with a cocktail of peptides, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants specifically crafted for your skin care needs and goals.
We also adjust the suction power on the wand so that delicate areas, like under the eyes, receive just the right amount of suction – not too much or too little.

Considerations for HydraFacials
While we promise a list of the pros and cons of HydraFacials, we should warn you now that there are very few drawbacks to this popular med spa treatment. Here they are:
Chance of Redness Immediately Following Treatment
Most clients leave their hydradermabrasion treatment with calm, glowing skin. But some with especially sensitive skin may see some redness following the treatment. This redness soon dissipates and reveals dewy, smooth skin.
Occasional Breakouts After Treatment
Breakouts after hydradermabrasion are not a common occurrence. However, as with other dermabrasion techniques, using salicylic and glycolic acids to loosen dead skin cells and unclog pores can result in a few blemishes coming to the surface afterward.
Not for Pregnant Women or Those With Active Skin Issues
Because HydraFacials include salicylic and glycolic acids, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid the treatment. Additionally, those with active, open skin issues, such as acne and rosacea flare-ups, should postpone treatment until their skin is calm again.
(We have many other treatments for active acne and laser treatments for rosacea – contact us to learn more about the many options available!)
How Does HydraFacial Stack Up Against Other Med Spa Treatments?
To be complete, examining the pros and cons of HydraFacials should include comparing hydradermabrasion with other popular med spa treatments. So here is the skinny on four of our favorite treatments for Dallas residents:
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion and HydraFacials are both minimally invasive skin treatments.
Microdermabrasion uses a device that sprays tiny crystals onto the skin to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells. As a more aggressive treatment than hydradermabrasion, redness, swelling, and discomfort may result.
Microdermabrasion reduces fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation.
HydraFacials are new, advanced, and versatile med spa treatments that are gentle and have little downtime while providing similar (if not better) results for most clients.
Which treatment is better? That depends on your skin type, concerns, and preferences.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a popular non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment using tiny needles to stimulate collagen production, resulting in smoother and plumper skin.
Microneedling is suitable for all skin types, making the treatment popular for individuals with deep acne scars or other facial scarring.
However, if you have a low tolerance for pain or needles or a higher risk of infection, consider the much gentler HydraFacial.

Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are available in different levels, from superficial to deep, to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells, resulting in smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin. Chemical peels generally provide more dramatic results than HydraFacials, but they may not suit people with certain skin conditions or darker skin tones. Additionally, chemical peels do have downtime as your skin heals.
HydraFacials are suitable for all skin tones and can help treat rosacea and dry skin. Your medical esthetician at Mara’s will personalize this gentle and versatile treatment to your skin’s needs.
IPL Photofacials
Mara loves giving photofacials! By using intense pulsed light (IPL) technology, our medical estheticians target specific skin issues like sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and broken capillaries, improving skin appearance and restoring youthful skin.
However, IPL photofacials can be more intense than HydraFacials and may require downtime, depending on the depth and strength of the treatment.
