Why We’re Obsessed With The Micropen Treatment

Jul 19, 2019 | Acne, Anti-aging

The verdict is in: we are officially obsessed with the MicroPen. If you haven’t heard about this revolutionary skincare treatment, let’s just say you’re about to consider our MicroPen specialist to be your own personal skincare fairy godmother. This brand-new microneedle technology is designed to combat a myriad of aging woes that so many of us encounter without the expensive hassle of investing in plastic surgery or any sort of medication. Want to know if the MicroPen treatment might be right for you? We’re here to answer all your questions (and have a feeling you might just fall in love, too).

So…What Is It?

The MicroPen is an automated Micro-Needling technology in aesthetic medicine that treats and improves fine lines, acne scars and overall skin appearance. It was accidentally discovered by a tattoo artist who noticed that there were certain side effects in the needling process – extra collagen production! The pen is composed of tiny needles that are used to create controlled micro-injuries to stimulate more collagen and elastin production in the skin. As the skin heals, the appearance and quality of the skin is improved and smoothened.

What Are The Benefits?

The MicroPen aids in the reduction of skin ailments such as acne scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (excessive coloring of the skin) and hypopigmentation (a lack of color). Previous patients have also noted that it creates a fresher appearance and a glow to the skin.

Needles? Ouch. Does It Hurt?

Patients have described the discomfort to be extremely minimal. Some areas are always going to be more sensitive than others, and the intensity of the needle will affect exactly how much discomfort you experience. However, this is only if you should opt-out of the numbing cream: if you should decide to numb your skin, it’s virtually painless, and actually almost tickles!

How Is The Procedure Done?

A certified MicroPen specialist will first set up a consultation prior to your appointment (can be the same day) and talk with you about what sort of skin ailments you are experiencing and what sort of results you are seeking. Once you have come up with a treatment plan, you will be given the option of numbing cream to minimize any discomfort during the procedure (many opt-outs, and find less aggressive treatments to be rather tolerable). Your skincare professional will apply a layer of topical gel to the area of treatment and select an intensity setting that correlates with your needs. Now for the fun part: in a single motion, your MicroPen pro will glide over the affected skin until all the treatment area has been covered. Generally, this procedure takes anywhere between 1 to 2 hours, depending on how aggressive you choose to go with the treatment.

Is There Downtime?

After your treatment, it’s very likely your skin will look like it has a bad sunburn. It’s also not unlikely to see little blood spots from penetrated skin (not to worry, completely normal). The time it takes for your skin to heal depends on how aggressive you went with your treatment. Generally, patients can expect to be red for 2 to 4 days (although some report the redness fading in as soon as 24 hours). We recommend trying to go makeup and sun free for at LEAST 2 days to minimize any damage during skin sensitization.

How Long Until I See My Results?

As mentioned, you should notice an immediate glow to your skin following your treatment. In a matter of days, you should start to notice visible improvements to your skin that become more apparent as more time goes on. Results will actually continue for up to 6 months as your body continues to produce more collagen! For optimal results, we suggest getting 2-3 treatments every 6-8 weeks, however, some patients see the results they want from a single treatment. For extreme cases of acne scarring, fine lines and stretch marks, it is recommended that you come in every 6 weeks.
